Another Greece, another Europe: economic policies beyond austerity

ABSTRACT

The May 2010 and March 2012 bail out agreements imposed austerity, deregulation and privatization policies to Greece. Economic and social consequences were devastating in terms of recession, unemployment, cuts to health and education expenditure and raising poverty.
The seminar will discuss how the SYRIZA- led government, elected in January 2015, tried to negotiate with the country’s creditors, while the European Central Bank (ECB) created conditions of asphyxiation for the Greek banks and the economy.
In 2015-16, the Greek Government struggled to defend principles of social sustainability, while implementing the August 2015 new hard agreement imposed by the creditors, and without any tangible progress in negotiations on debt restructuring.
The seminar will discuss what we can learn from the Greek experience, raising relevant issues for Europe and for Italy, and discussing conditions for alternative policies.
